Family Law Mediation Saskatchewan: When Talking It Out Isn’t Enough

Separation Agreements

One morning, I had ordered an Uber to the office at Panko Collaborative Law & Mediation — a reminder of how vital family law mediation in Saskatchewan can be when families are in conflict.

My driver noticed I was going to a law office. He mentioned that in the past, he had reached out to a law firm for help with his family law conflict.

As we talked, he shared his story, and it broke my heart. When he sought assistance, it was recommended to him that he should “just try to talk it out with his ex”. So, he did. But there was a dispute, and it resulted in him losing contact with his child. No agreement or other documentation was put in place, the other parent moved with their child far away, and now he is resigned to waiting to reconnect with his child when they reach adulthood. He chose not to fight to avoid exposing his child to parental conflict, but at a devastating cost.

It doesn’t have to be that way.

It’s not about fighting, it’s about family, it’s about relationships, and it’s about a child who deserves a father. Not to fight for her, but to be there for her. It is the right of a child to have a meaningful relationship with both of their parents.

I told him he should really sit down with one of our lawyers. A lawyer can listen to his story and help put it into the context of the law, showing him what his options are and what things could look like depending on the path he chooses.

That’s the piece that was missing.

If you find yourself in a similar situation…

Relying on verbal agreements is risky. Through mediation, you can create a written agreement that meets the needs of your family.
